Personality Poker Book Cover

Good Ideas Aren’t Always Good Ideas

There’s a big difference between good ideas in theory and good ideas in practice.

On October 28, 2010, Personality Poker was published by Portfolio Penguin. To solve the challenge of pairing a book with a deck of cards, they created a hardcover with the cards glued to the top.

Smart idea—until:

  1. The decks started falling off.
  2. The oversized back cover didn’t fit on bookstore shelves.

Bookstores stopped carrying it, and we retired the book in 2014. Since then, the only way to get it has been through expensive third-party resellers.

It’s a powerful reminder: if an idea isn’t tested in the real world, it might not be as good as it sounds.

Now, fifteen years later, I’m relaunching Personality Poker—this time without glued-on cards. Instead, it comes with access to an online version of the game.

Coming soon. Stay tuned.
