10 Reframes Using 10 Lenses in 10 Minutes

Here is a short segment from a live speech where I used 10 different lenses to reframe a problem 10 different ways in 10 minutes. The problem I was asked to solve was, “How can we reinvent mobility in cities?” This was for an automobile manufacturer in Europe.

Hyponyms and Hypernyms

Lenses 5 and 10 are word substitution reframes, similar to a synonym. A hyponym is a word that is more specific than the original word (pigeon is a hyponym for bird), whereas a hypernym is a word that is more abstract than the original word (dog is a hypernym for poodle). A thesaurus is a great place to find synonyms (words that are of a similar level of abstraction). To find hyponyms and hypernyms, use the following two resources:

  • http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn (Click “S”; in some cases, hyponyms are listed as troponyms). To make it easier for you to remember, you can simply go to www.hypernyms.com and that will redirect you to the Princeton page.
  • http://conceptnet.io (A more user-friendly site that does not use the terms hypernym or hyponym)
